Young Agents Luncheon & Seminars 2012

The Insurors Young Agents program will hold its first event of 2012 on Tuesday, February 7th at the Nashville Hilton Downtown. The event will begin with a free luncheon from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm CST featuring the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Julie Mix McPeak. Event co-sponsor Union Standard has offered Young Agent (agents only) attendees the opportunity to stay FOR FREE after the luncheon for an afternoon of learning and networking with key industry topics. The first seminar is on Loss Control (approved for 1 CE credit), followed by
Audits (approved for 1 CE credit) and ending with Claims (approved for 1 CE credit).

Julie Mix McPeak
Commissioner, Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance
Commissioner McPeak was appointed by Governor Bill Haslam to lead the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance in January 2011. She brings to the department more than 12 years of legal and administrative experience in state government. Before being named to lead the department, she practiced as Counsel to the Insurance practice group of law firm Burr & Forman LLP. She also served as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Insurance (KOI). Before her appointment as Executive Director, McPeak spent nine years as an attorney for KOI, the final five as general counsel. She also
served as general counsel to the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet. McPeak received her J.D. from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1994. She is a 1990 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where she received her B.B.A., With Distinction, in Marketing.
Jamie Hernandez
Loss Control Manager, Union Standard Insurance
Jamie is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a B.S.Degree in Engineering Technology with Industrial Safety & Fire Protection specialties. Jamie has worked in the Insurance Industry for over 25 years. His expertise lies with Loss Control & Risk Management (Commercial lines), and has workedfor various companies in both fields throughout the United States. Jamie is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) in two different disciplines (Comprehensive Practice and Product Safety Aspects), has a designation of ARM (Associate in Risk Management) and is a Texas Licensed Risk Manager.
He is currently working for Union Standard Insurance Group as the Loss Control Department Head accountable for the loss control operations for all states USIC is licensed.
Richard Pope
Premium Audit Manager, Union Standard Insurance
Richard began his career as an accountant for Baker International Group (now Baker-Hughes) in 1976, ultimately becoming the Controller of Baker Prolift, Inc. in 1982. He began his insurance career as a claims adjuster with American Interstate Insurance Company (now Amerisafe, Inc.) in 1992, becoming the Western Regional Claims Manager in 1995. He brought this claims background into the premium audit field in 2003 working
for OSI through the end of 2004. He has worked for Union Standard Insurance Group as their Premium Audit Manager since January 2005 and has revitalized their premium audit department.
Don Porter
Claims Operation Manager, Union Standard Insurance
Don was raised in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M in 1997. He began working for Union Standard in 1999 as a Claims Trainee and started in the Property Unit as an Adjuster in 2000. He moved to Nashville in 2004 and started out as an Underwriting Trainee and worked until 2007 as a Commercial Underwriter in the Nashville Branch. Don became the Claims Operations Manager in 2007 and have been working in that position since that time. He has acheived both the CPCU and AIC Designations.
Kevin Ownby
Principal, Ownby Insurance Services - Sevierville/ Young Agent Chairman, Insurors of Tennessee
Kevin is a co-owner of Ownby Insurance Service, Inc., in Sevierville, and is serving on the Board in a second term as Young Agents Chairman. A 1992 graduate of Sevier County High School, Kevin went on to obtain his Bachelors degree in Finance from UTK in 1997. He has been with the family agency for over 15 years, where he is now a third-generation owner.
